Tips for writing your project

Putting a project together is a big job and can be quite tricky! We hope this website will help you to find out what you want to know. Here are some useful tips:

  1. Think of an interesting subject
Choose something that really appeals to you – that’s what makes a project fun to do. To find information on your chosen subject, look in books and encyclopedias and on the internet.
  2. Choose a good title and interesting chapter headings
Your project must have a title, chapters and paragraphs. The title should clearly indicate what the project is all about. Decide how many chapters you want and give them headings. You don’t have to copy headings from the website if you don’t want to.
  3. Find the right information and pictures
Decide which information (from books) and pictures (photos, cartoons, charts, diagrams etc) you want to have in each chapter. If this website doesn’t give enough detail or you don’t know enough about the subject, look elsewhere for extra material.
  4. Then … start writing!

Once your subject and overall plan are ready, you can get down to writing. Don’t forget:

    • You can use any of the texts from our website, but you should always try to express them in your own words.
    • Don’t use any words that you don't actually know. If you come across difficult words, ask your parents or teacher what they mean, or look them up yourself in a dictionary.
    • Leave spaces for the pictures.
    • Don’t write one long string of sentences. As soon as you start a new topic, leave a line and begin a new paragraph. You can also write a heading for the paragraph, if you wish.
    • Give examples and comparisons. This will make your project more interesting to read.
  5. Presentation
Now it’s time to add some finishing touches. To make your project look really professional, design a cover page. Write an introduction and a conclusion and make a list of contents. At the end, give a list of all the sources you consulted – books, webtexts, pictures, photos etc.
  6. Check and print
When your project is finished, get somebody to check it for you. Then print it all out and put it into an attractive binder.
