CATTLE FARMING

Milk

In the Netherlands, cows are kept mainly for their milk. A Dutch cow produces about 20 litres of milk a day. The cows are fed and milked by machines. The milk is then taken to large dairy factories, where it is purified and put into cartons. It is also used to make butter, yoghurt and different types of cheese.

Cheese

Every year the Netherlands exports 55 million kilos of cheese. The most famous Dutch cheeses are from Edam and Gouda. Dutch cheeses come in different ‘ages’. Young cheese has a mild flavour. Old cheese, which has been left to mature for at least ten months, has a strong flavour.
