SCHOOL DAY

7.00

I find it really difficult to get up in the morning. I’d much rather stay in bed. Once I’m up I have a shower. Then I get dressed quickly.

7.30

Breakfast

Once everybody is up, we have breakfast. We usually eat breakfast together: Mum, Dad, my brother and me. I usually start with a bowl of cornflakes. Then I have a cheese sandwich on brown bread, but I also like peanut butter and chocolate sprinkles. In the picture you can see all the things we have on the table in the morning.

8.00

It’s time to go. I put on my coat and take my bicycle out of the shed. I like cycling to school, except when it’s rainy or windy.

I meet my school friends on the way, and we cycle to school together. We wait for each other every day. I even leave home a bit early so that we have time to chat.

8.45

At schoolIt’s time for the first lesson of the day. There are 30 children in my class. We have a different timetable every day of the week. Today I am starting with a maths lesson, followed by biology and music. After these three lessons we have a short break.

08.45-09.30    Maths
09.30-10.15    Biology
10.15-11.00    Music

11.00 to 11.20 Morning break

During the break I sit in the cafeteria with my friends. Today we are talking mainly about our school trip. Next week the whole class is going to the Delta Project in Zeeland (see Section 5 if you want to know more about the Delta Project). I’m really looking forward to it.

11.20

ClassroomTime for more lessons. First we have Dutch, followed by French. I like languages. I think French is a beautiful language. When these lessons are over, it’s time for our lunch break.

11.20-12.05    Dutch
12.05-12.50    French

12.50 to 13.20 Lunch break

During the lunch break I eat with my friends in the school cafeteria. I eat the sandwiches I made in the morning. I’ve also brought a nice apple today. My mother gives me money to buy milk every day at lunchtime.

13.20

ComputerclassAfter lunch we have English, computer science and history. We also have a study hour when our class tutor helps us if we are having trouble with any of our subjects.

13.20-14.05    English
14.05-14.50    Study Hour
14.50-15.35    Computer Science
15.35-16.20    History

I get homework for all my subjects. For English and French we have to learn vocabulary. Boring!

16.20

It’s time to go home. I set off straightaway!Bedroom

16.45

I usually get home by five o’clock. My mother is already there, and we have a cup of tea and talk about everything that happened during the day.

After that I usually do some of my homework, but not today. My best friend Sanne has sent me a text message on my mobile phone. She wants to know whether she can come round. That’s much more fun than doing homework. First I’ll go and buy some sweets at the supermarket from my pocket money. I always save some of my pocket money to buy clothes or CDs.

18.30

Between six o’clock and seven o’clock we have supper. Tonight we’re having nasi. This is an Indonesian dish made of rice, vegetables and meat. Yum!

19.30

After supper I do my homework, which usually takes me only half an hour. When I’m done, I switch on the television. I often watch TMF, a music channel that shows lots of Dutch and international pop videos.

21.00

In the evening, I like to chat with my friends on the Internet. I have my own computer in my bedroom.

21.30

It’s been a busy day and I’m pretty tired. I have to get up early again tomorrow, so I’m going to bed now.

Thanks for coming to school with me today.

Good night!

Most Dutch people eat sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. In the evening they have a hot meal, which often includes potatoes. Some typical Dutch dishes are pea soup, kale with sausage and hutspot (potatoes mashed with onions and carrots).
