LIVING IN THE COUNTRYSIDE

Jisp

I live in a village called Jisp in the northwest of the Netherlands, not far from the sea. We live on a farm. My father grows fruit and vegetables. He has his own business. My mother also works in the family business.

In the area where I live, you can see lots of fields of grain and corn, as well as bulb fields. When the bulbs flower in the spring and summer it’s really beautiful here.

I often go to school by bicycle. Sometimes the wind is against me and I have to pedal really hard. But when the wind is in my back I hardly need to pedal at all.

Farms

Dutch FarmEvery region in the Netherlands has its own type of farm. In old farmhouses, the walls above the fireplace and in the kitchen are often decorated with pretty tiles.

Gezelligheid

The Dutch like having fun together and being cosy. Gezellig is a typically Dutch word, and it’s the feeling you might get when you’re playing a board game and drinking hot chocolate with your family while it’s pouring with rain outside. Outside everything is cold and wet and inside everything is … gezellig.
